A FAMILY HOME SESSION IN HAMILTON | NASIM & AMIR

The forecast for the weekend was not good, so the day before, we made the call to move Nasim and Amir’s session indoors. A friend of theirs had a place we could use, and that was that.

I got there early and spent a while working out the flow. Where the light was good, which spots would hold up, and where we could move to when we needed a change. There was a couch near a window that was working nicely. When the sun came out now and then I clipped up some netting to soften it. Then I set up a backdrop in an open part of the room with good light, somewhere to go for the looser shots.

The couch was for the lineups, everyone together, the more formal ones, and a few silly ones with the kids in between. Then we moved to the floor by the backdrop and let it get casual.

The shoot was for the little one’s first birthday. That was the reason. We were lucky that Amir’s mum and his brother were in from overseas and could be there too, which doesn’t happen often. They were good to have around, in some of the shots, and helping with the kids when someone needed a hand or a distraction.

That’s one of the things about doing it at home, or somewhere like it. Nobody’s standing around in a paddock waiting for their turn. There’s a seat if you want one, the kids have somewhere to be, and the people not in the photo can talk amongst themselves until they’re needed. It takes the pressure out of it.

At one point I had three generations of hands resting on each other and I took a photo of just that. It’s one of my favourites from the day.

The connection was all there. The weather didn’t take any of it away. If anything the room made everyone a bit more relaxed than a park would have.
