SARAH’S MATERNITY SESSION (STUDIO + RIVER)

A simple maternity session with a strong finish

Sarah wanted maternity photos that felt easy. No big plan, no mood board, no pressure to “perform”. Just something calm and beautiful to remember this season.

So I suggested a simple split session: half in the studio for clean, high key portraits, then a short trip down to the river for a softer, natural feel. Nothing complicated. Just two looks, one session, and a handful of images that really land.

The plan

When someone comes in without specific ideas, that’s honestly normal. Most people just know they want to remember what this felt like.

So we kept it simple:

  • Studio first: high key, soft light, clean background, slow pace
  • River second: gentle movement, space to breathe, a few wide shots to place the story

The studio images (her favourite)

The studio was the clear winner for Sarah. High key suits maternity really well when you want the focus on shape, softness, and emotion, without distractions.

We leaned into:

  • simple posing and prompts that felt natural
  • clean lines and strong profiles
  • hands on belly, eyes down, small shifts in weight and breath

She also borrowed a few maternity outfits from my client wardrobe, which made the whole thing easier. No last minute stress about what to wear, and we could move straight into shooting.

The river set

After the studio, we headed down to the river for a different feel. The river shots add variety, but they also give context. It turns the session from “portraits” into “a chapter”.

We kept this part relaxed and minimal:

  • a few wide frames with the landscape
  • a few closer frames with calm expressions
  • nothing forced, just gentle direction

Why I think you only need a few strong images

When it’s one person on their own, you don’t need 60 photos to tell the story.

You need a few that are unmistakably strong.

The goal is simple: pick one image that deserves to live on the wall, framed, where it actually gets seen. Not buried in a phone camera roll.

That’s why I shoot these sessions with a finish in mind. We’re not just collecting photos. We’re making one or two pieces worth printing and keeping.

If you’re thinking about a maternity session

If you want something easy, with direction the whole time, and images that are designed to become a print, this style of session is perfect.

You don’t need ideas. You just need to show up, and I’ll guide the rest.

If you’d like to book, send me a message and tell me your due month and whether you prefer studio, outdoor, or a split like Sarah’s.
